Kodak Portra Gold (LUT)

Before
After

If you’ve ever downloaded a “Portra” LUT only to find it turns your photos into a muddy, flat mess, you aren’t alone. The internet is flooded with imitations that just slap a heavy teal-and-orange wash over your image and call it a day. I wanted something completely different: a look that actually captures the soul, punch, and genuine warmth of real 35mm film, without forcing you into a tedious grading workflow.

So, I did what any mad scientist with a camera would do. I built a Frankenstein’s monster: My Kodak Portra Gold Lumix LUT.

Whether you are trying to get the look in-camera with custom Photo Styles or dial it in during post-production using Lightroom, this LUT is built to give you the true essence of two legendary film stocks stitched together, ready to use with whatever gear you have on hand.

The Best of Both Worlds: Portra Meets Gold

This LUT is all about character. Built specifically for the Lumix Standard color profile, it bridges the gap between modern clinical sharpness and the rich, nostalgic warmth of actual 35mm film. I designed this look to merge the distinct qualities of two favorites:

  • The Portra Influence (The Brains): Kodak Portra is famous for its incredibly natural, flattering skin tones and smooth, forgiving highlight roll-off. This LUT preserves those healthy skin tones, ensuring your subjects look true-to-life even in tricky lighting. Pairing it with a cheap 1/4 Black Diffusion filter takes this a step further, subtly blooming the highlights to recreate that organic, professional film halation.

  • The Gold Influence (The Brawn): Kodak Gold is loved for its consumer-vintage vibe—specifically its punchy contrast and deep, amber/yellow warmth. By pushing the contrast and shifting the hue in-camera, this LUT injects that classic “Golden Hour” nostalgia into the shadows and midtones.

Real-World Testing with Minimal Gear

I’m a bit of a minimalist when it comes to my photo gear. You won’t find me hauling around a massive backpack of heavy, expensive vintage glass to get a cinematic feel. In fact, my entire setup is just my Lumix S5IIX, two kit lenses, and a cheap Neewer 1/4 Black Diffusion filter.

A lot of people think you need complex log grading or top-tier lenses to pull a soulful 35mm aesthetic straight out of the camera. I built the Portra Gold LUT to prove that wrong. Using just that minimal setup (specifically the standard 20-60mm kit lens for these shots), it delivers exactly what those other LUTs miss:

  • Indoor & Family Photography: Standard camera profiles often struggle with mixed indoor lighting, leaving skin tones looking sterile or flat. In the indoor test shot, you can see how the Portra qualities protect the skin tones while the Kodak Gold warmth completely transforms the environment. The diffusion filter takes the edge off the highlights on the kitchen appliances, turning a quick snapshot into a cherished, lived-in memory.

  • Street & Urban Landscapes: Taking this setup out on the street is where the combination really thrives. Against harsh sunlight and bright snow on the sidewalk, the highlight roll-off manages the bright spots smoothly. Meanwhile, the Kodak Gold influence adds a stunning amber hue to the stone and concrete architecture. The resulting color contrast against the deep blue sky gives modern street scenes a gritty, 1970s documentary vibe.

Dialing It In: The Exact Photo Style Settings

To get this exact look in-camera, the LUT does half the work, and your Lumix’s Photo Style menu does the rest. I intentionally pushed the contrast and shifted the hue to emulate the punchy, vibrant characteristics of the film.

Here are the exact in-camera settings I used for these shots:

Profile: Standard

White Balance: AWB

iDynamic: Standard

Contrast: +2

Highlight:

Shadow:

Saturation:

Hue: 0

Grain: Low

Color Noise: Off

Noise Reduction: -2

Sharpness: -2

How to Use This LUT

This is not a V-Log utility LUT. To get the most out of Portra Gold, apply it in post-production editing software like Adobe Lightroom, or integrate it into your mobile workflow using the Lumix Lab app. Just make sure your base photos are shot using the Standard profile with the Photo Style tweaks listed above.

Whether you’re capturing quiet moments at home or walking the streets searching for harsh shadows, having this Photo Style dialed in means your Kodak-inspired aesthetic is baked into the foundation the second you press the shutter. Grab your camera, thread on a diffusion filter, load up the LUT, and see how it transforms your everyday shooting.

Pro-Tip: The Magic of Contrast +2 and 1/4 Diffusion

You might be wondering why I crank the in-camera contrast up to +2 while simultaneously using a diffusion filter to soften the image. It’s actually a deliberate “push-pull” technique designed specifically to mimic how chemical film handles light.

When you push the Lumix Standard profile contrast to +2, you get those deep, rich, punchy shadows that Kodak Gold is famous for. However, on a digital sensor, increasing contrast that much can make your highlights look incredibly harsh, clinical, and “crunchy.”

That’s where the Neewer 1/4 Black Diffusion filter comes in to save the day. It blooms and softens those bright spots, taking the sharp digital edge off the highlights while leaving those deep, +2 contrast shadows completely intact. It’s the perfect recipe for organic halation and a true 35mm feel, all without having to touch an editing slider.
