Turnstile (LUT)

Before
After

Not every street photograph needs crushing, aggressive contrast or punchy, cinematic colors. Sometimes the city feels quiet, everyday, and a little nostalgic. When the mood shifts from high-drama to quiet observation, you need a profile that softens the harshness of the street.

Meet the Turnstile LUT.

Where my other profiles prioritize punchy realism or cinematic warmth, Turnstile is engineered for a completely different aesthetic. It delivers the soft, nostalgic, and subdued look of an indie lifestyle magazine or a photobook. Think of a roll of Fuji Pro 400H or Kodak Portra 160, processed on a flat lab scanner, and printed on heavy matte paper.

The Indie Editorial Aesthetic

Built on the Lumix Standard color profile, Turnstile prioritizes physical texture and atmosphere over perfect dynamic range. Looking at the results, it transforms clinical digital files using three distinct characteristics:

  • Milky, Matte Blacks: This is the defining feature of the Turnstile profile. Instead of dropping shadows into pure, absolute black (like the man’s puffer jacket against the brick wall), this LUT lifts them into a soft, milky dark gray. It instantly gives your digital files the tactile texture of a matte print.

  • Subdued, Earthy Colors: It intentionally backs off on digital vibrance. Rich reds and oranges (like the brick wall or the cyclist’s bag) are muted and softened. They remain true to life but lack the artificial “punch” of modern digital sensors, allowing the geometry of the scene to take center stage.

  • Creamy, Nostalgic Highlights: It removes the sterile, clinical white balance of digital daylight. White jackets, crosswalk lines, and bright skies take on a slightly warm, creamy tint that glues the whole image together with an atmospheric wash.

Built for the Overcast City

Turnstile thrives in lighting conditions that usually make digital photos feel flat or lifeless.

  • Cloudy Days: It leans into soft, diffused light, making overcast cityscapes feel intentionally gentle and cinematic.

  • Brick and Architecture: It softens hard textures and brutalist concrete, turning everyday commutes into editorial spreads.

  • Solitary Street Scenes: The lifted black point removes the harshness from deep shadows, creating a quiet vibe perfect for documenting solitary figures in an urban environment.

How to Use This LUT

You can load this profile directly into your camera to be used in your custom user profiles, drop it into the Lumix Lab app for quick edits on your phone, or apply it in your editing software of choice (like Adobe Lightroom or Premiere). Just make sure your base photos are shot using the Standard photo style with the tweaks listed above.
