If you shoot digital but love the look of 35mm film, you already know the struggle. Modern Lumix sensors offer incredible dynamic range, biting sharpness, and pristine files. But out of the box, they can feel a bit too clinical. To bridge the gap between digital perfection and analog soul, I engineered the ultimate Lumix Portrait 400 LUT. This custom emulation brings the sought-after magic of Kodak Portra directly to your Lumix files, completely skipping the muddy color casts of typical vintage presets.
Portra is the holy grail of color negative film because of its subtlety. It isn’t about heavy teal-and-orange washes; it’s about character. Built specifically for the Lumix Standard color profile, this LUT brings out three iconic characteristics:
Creamy Highlight Roll-Off: It beautifully tames harsh digital glare, giving white building facades and bright skies a soft, glowing film latitude instead of harsh digital clipping.
Flattering Skin Tones: Portra is famous for making people look great. This profile neutralizes the surrounding environment to bring out luminous, peachy warmth in skin tones without making subjects look sunburned.
True Neutrality: By carefully pulling red out of the midtones, urban environments like concrete sidewalks stay perfectly gray. You get the warmth of film without the fake pink or green tints found in cheap presets.
Many “film look” presets break down the second you leave the golden hour. I stress-tested this LUT to survive the hardest lighting scenarios you’ll face on the street:
Harsh Sunlight: It smooths midday bright spots, allowing natural sunlight to feel authentic and grounded.
Mixed Open Shade: It protects skin tones and keeps colors clean—like maintaining pristine blue denim—even when shadows usually introduce a sickly green bleed.
Flat Overcast Light: I baked in just enough midtone “bite” so that cloudy days retain deep dimension and rich, dense reds without looking washed out.
To get this exact look, the LUT does half the work, and your Lumix’s Photo Style menu does the rest. Keep your contrast curve neutral in-camera to let the LUT handle the highlight roll-off. Here are my recommended settings:
Profile: Standard
White Balance: AWB
iDynamic: Standard
Contrast: 0
Highlight: 0
Shadow: 0
Saturation: 0
Hue: 0
Grain: Low
Color Noise: Off
Noise Reduction: -2
Sharpness: -2
This is not a V-Log utility LUT. To get the most out of it, apply the profile in post-production software like Adobe Lightroom, integrate it into your mobile workflow using the Lumix Lab app, or apply it in camera. Whether you shoot street documentary work or portraits, this profile bakes a true Kodak-inspired aesthetic into your foundation the second you press the shutter.
